After emerging as the proposed replacement for Twitter (now X), Mastodon’s user base slipped quickly and significantly. However, it turns out that the decentralized social media app may have more users than it thinks.
According to founder and CEO Yevgeny Ruchko, between October 2 and 8 Mastodon’s user base was underestimated thanks to a “network connectivity issue” with its data collector. The app actually has 407,814 monthly active users which is higher than previously reported. This brings Mastodon’s total monthly user base to 1.8 million.
There are also an additional 2.34 million registered users that were not previously counted, Ruchko said.
Mastodon has gained millions of new users since Elon Musk bought Twitter.
In February 2023, Mastodon reportedly had 1.4 million users, a marked drop from its 2.5 million monthly users in December 2022. The current numbers indicate a good momentum for Mastodon, as it continues to grow despite a bit of a rollercoaster in growth.
Much of this can be attributed to the direction given by X owner and former CEO Elon Musk. But despite Musk’s moves — including recent decisions to remove link headlines, roll out an ad format that can’t be reported or blocked, and test three new paid tiers — the app’s There are still 245 million active users. However, as confirmed by CEO Linda Yaccarino, X is losing active users daily.
Alternatives to the X, including the Mastodon, may still have a smaller user base, but that doesn’t seem set in stone.
