After emerging as the proposed replacement for Twitter (now X), Mastodon’s user base slipped quickly and significantly. However, it turns out that the decentralized social media app may have more users than it thinks.

According to founder and CEO Yevgeny Ruchko, between October 2 and 8 Mastodon’s user base was underestimated thanks to a “network connectivity issue” with its data collector. The app actually has 407,814 monthly active users which is higher than previously reported. This brings Mastodon’s total monthly user base to 1.8 million.

There are also an additional 2.34 million registered users that were not previously counted, Ruchko said.
