Mix Back to the futureParent-centric time travel with scream‘s self-aware slasher sensibilities, and you get it. Absolute killer.

Blumhouse Television’s new film and Directed by Nahnachka Khan (Be forever my baby) borrows heavily from both popular franchises in its tale of a time-traveling serial killer, though it coats those familiar plot points in a modern-day teen movie sheen to set itself apart. The result is a fun, fruity horror comedy that examines the culture clash between ’80s teens and today’s teens (with lots of blood).

What is it Absolute killer in regards to?

Absolute killer A murderous adventure ensues courtesy of the infamous Sweet 16 killer. Around Halloween 1987, this masked killer slaughtered three 16-year-old girls in the small town of Vernon. The killer never struck again and was never caught. However, 35 years later, his infamous legacy lives on. A true crime podcast and tour of the Vernon murders keep the memory of the murders alive, while each year around Halloween, friends of the victims mourn their loss.

One of those friends is Pam (Julie Bowen), whose 17-year-old daughter Jamie (Kiernan Shipka) watches over her mother’s Halloween-time warnings. “It’s not 1987 anymore,” she quips. After all, her parents can track her phone, and she’s armed with everything from pepper spray to a rape whistle. What could go wrong?

Turns out, quite a bit. The Sweet 16 killer is back on top to claim a fourth victim – and Jamie is next on their list. On the run from Vernon’s resident slasher, Jamie accidentally winds up in 1987 thanks to her best friend Amelia’s (Kelsey Mavima) time travel machine. (It’s Amelia’s science fair project—baking soda volcanoes tremble in front of her!) Finding themselves just days away from the actual murder of the Sweet 16 killer, Jamie, along with her teenage mother, finds them first. Set out on a quest to stop being in place. (Olivia Holt) As she goes.

Absolute killer It pokes fun at everything from racial differences to time travel tropes.

As Jamie’s 1987 adventure begins, Absolute killer It leans more on comedy than on horror — especially when it comes to Jamie’s culture shock. Sure, he has three murders to stop, but he also has time to criticize disturbing aspects of ’80s culture. Everything from racist school mascots to questionable shirts provokes a scathing comment, and while the “Gen X vs. Gen Z” bit may be in danger of getting stale, Shipka’s responses sell it every time. There are enough. “Unwanted touch!” His angry cry! As he is thrown out of a party is the peak teen film.

References to teen movies are running rampant. Absolute killerCreates her own gang of mean girls with plastic and Heathers movie drawings: The Mollies, a.k.a. future murder victims. Pam is their ringleader, a nightmare in a shoulder pad who bluntly tells Jamie to “fuck off and die” when they first meet. However, Jamie’s constant warnings about the Sweet 16 killer draw him closer to Pam, leading to some genuinely poignant scenes where Jamie gets an inside look at his mother’s own youth.

However, not everyone is as receptive to Jamie’s warnings as Pam is – especially not the cops. (It doesn’t help that Jamie straight up tells them he’s a time traveler.) Without much of a support system beyond Pam and Amelia’s teenage mom Lauren (Troy Lee-Ann Johnson), Jamie has to come up with some creative solutions. There are recourses, including the particularly fun twist of using the Sweet 16 Killer podcast to recall details about the murders.

If none of the time travel logistics make sense to you, Absolute killer Agrees “I hate time travel movies,” says a Vernon police officer (Randall Park). “They never mean anything.” The meta-self-deprecation reads as a great cop-out, especially when the film’s temporal Whimsy chaos unravels somewhat in the third act. But Absolute killer There’s enough humor in the absurdity of time travel – including a subplot where Jamie has to stop his “very horny” teenage parents from hooking up – to make up for it.

Absolute killer Makes a great starter slasher.

While Absolute killer It is a horror film, its horror elements and slasher mystery are somewhat less than other entries in the genre. If you’re a horror fan, you may be disappointed by the lack of familiar beats, or brutal or extra-creative kills, even though the time travel elements add somewhat of a fresh spin.

However, if you’re a scary newbie looking to get into slasher flicks, Absolute killer A complete introduction. It keeps things light enough to creep you out while still delivering its fair share of scares. Homages to classic slashers also abound: Sweet 16 Color’s mask is reminiscent of that. HalloweenThe iconic look of ‘Michael Myers’, while initially a murder would take place at home. scream The opening Khan uses several tried-and-true techniques to plant us firmly in slasher territory, including POV shots that stop the characters just when they think they’re alone.

Although Absolute killer Inspired by classic slashers, its blend of high school comedy and zany time travel feels like what if we got — and I mean that a compliment! – An R-Rated Disney Channel Original Movie. Absolute killer DCOMs have more in common than you might think: silly concepts, high school hijinks, corny special effects, and a genius best friend who happens to develop game-changing technology. Holt himself is a DCOM veteran!

But more than that, Absolute killer DCOM achieves pure viewing pleasure, albeit for an older audience. This is the kind of movie you want to get your friends together to all pack into a room, snacks in hand, ready to scream and laugh and cringe at the high school of it all. It may not be perfect, but when it comes to sheer fun, Absolute killer In fact, it totally kills.

Absolute killer It was reviewed outside of its world premiere at 2023’s Fantastic Fest. This Hit Prime Video October 6.
