The Fall of the House of Usher Full of WTF moments, but one of the most memorable is Liv Usher (Rahul Kohli) blinding his newly acquired, mischievous cat.
In the fourth episode of the Netflix series based on the work of Edgar Allan Poe, it is made clear that what Leo is experiencing is a delusion brought on by his deepening psychosis – of the bathtub. The price includes the value of dead animals left by the cat. . But if you were still confused about what was real in the episode and what wasn’t, creator Mike Flanagan has now shed some light.
‘Fall of the House of Usher’ trumps burn you might have missed.
Last week, Flanagan explained that there is an important difference between the episode and Poe’s short story “The Black Cat,” from which she takes her cues. In the story, the narrator kills a cat he despises, only to be preyed upon by a similar cat.
“In his version, a cat is killed,” Flanagan wrote. “In MY version, killing the cat appears to be a hallucination. In MY version, the cat is alive and well.”

Flanagan went on to say that the key to all of this lies in Pluto’s Gucci collar.
“That’s why we made such a big deal about the fact that Pluto was wearing a Gucci collar and not a new cat,” he said. “Look at the cat in the last shot of the episode, wearing a collar… and the empty bathtub, which means all the animal violence was imagined.”

Basically, Flanagan is saying that cats are never killed in the show’s storyline. In fact, the cat that terrorizes Leo, that he kills and that he horribly blinds, is all in his head. The dreams are conjured up by the evil Verna (Carla Gugino), who disguises herself as a cat sanctuary manager to see Leo’s fate as a doomed usher – in case you had any doubts. So, Varna’s gouged eye is her mirror. Blind Cat and she acts in a quirky way, much like when she embodies the physicality of a chimpanzee right before Camille (Kate Segal) is murdered at the RUE morgue in Episode 3.
The cat at the very end, who jumps to his death after sniffing Leo on the street, is the real Pluto, the pet he tells his partner is missing—and he’s alive and well. Is.
